Site setup
Run OnlyAI SEO on a multilingual site (Polylang and WPML)
What changes automatically with Polylang or WPML, how to translate your title templates, how links, sitemaps and redirects behave per language, and why hreflang is left to your language plugin.
Time
10 minutes
What you need
- Polylang or WPML active
- The plugin installed
OnlyAI SEO detects Polylang or WPML by itself. There is nothing to switch on.
What happens automatically
- Templates are handed over for translation. Every title, description and share-text template in Titles & social is registered as a string (group "OnlyAI SEO").
- Each page says which language it is in. Open Graph carries the page's locale plus
og:locale:alternatefor its other languages, and structured data uses the page's language. - Internal links stay in one language. The Link Builder only suggests links between pages in the same language, and the Auditor does not call the same title in two languages a duplicate.
- The AI is asked for the right language. AI text is requested in the language of the content it is given.
Translate your templates
- Fill in your templates in OnlyAI SEO, Settings, Titles & social (in your main language).
- Polylang: open Languages, Translations and translate the strings in the group OnlyAI SEO. WPML: open String Translation.
- Visitors get the translation for the language they are reading. The settings screen always shows the original text.
The HTML sitemap
[onlyai_sitemap] shows the language being viewed. Add lang="all" or lang="fr" to choose.
Redirects
Rules are matched on the site's stored address, so a /fr/ prefix or a language domain never causes a mismatch or a doubled /fr/fr/. Include the language prefix in the address you redirect from.
hreflang
OnlyAI SEO does not print hreflang tags. Polylang and WPML already do, and printing them twice would confuse search engines. The XML sitemap lists the pages of every language in one file.
