Keyword cannibalization in WordPress: how to find it and fix it

13 October 2026 · 2 min read

What it means when two of your posts compete for one search, how to see it in Search Console, and three safe fixes: a canonical, an internal link or a redirect.

Keyword cannibalization means two or more pages on your own site compete for the same search. Instead of one strong page, Google sees several similar ones, may switch between them from day to day, and none ranks as well as a single page could.

When it is a problem, and when it is not

  • A problem: two near-identical guides to the same topic, an old post and its rewrite, a tag page outranking the article it lists.
  • Not a problem: two pages that answer different questions and both appear for a broad search. Different intents can coexist.

How to find it

  1. In Search Console, open Performance and pick a search you care about.
  2. Open the Pages tab. If two or more of your pages share the clicks and impressions for that search, they compete.
  3. Or let the plugin find them: connect Google (how), then open OnlyAI SEO, Insights, Cannibalization. The Cannibalization Resolver agent turns the clearest cases into Inbox cards.

A quick check of your own is the same focus keyword on two posts warning in the editor, which names the other post.

Three fixes, from lightest to strongest

1. Link from the weaker page to the stronger one

When both pages deserve to exist, make the relationship clear: link from the weaker page to the winner on words that name the topic. This is the lightest move and is not undone automatically, so use it when you are sure.

2. Point a canonical at the winner

A canonical tells search engines which version you prefer when the content is largely the same. Use it only when the pages really are near-duplicates; a wrong canonical can make a page disappear from results. In OnlyAI SEO this is reversible.

3. Merge and redirect

If the weaker page adds nothing, move anything worth keeping into the winner and 301-redirect the weaker address to it. That passes the links and ends the competition for good. Also reversible in the plugin (redirects guide).

Prevent it

  • Give each post its own focus keyword and write down which post owns which phrase.
  • Before writing a new post, search your site for the topic. Update the old post instead if it covers it.
  • Noindex or tidy thin archives that repeat your posts (cleanup guide).

Give search a few weeks after any change before judging the result.
