Content decay: how to find old posts that need a refresh (and which to leave alone)

13 October 2026 · 2 min read

Why posts lose traffic over time, how to tell a post worth refreshing from one about something that happened, and a safe, small-edit routine for updating old content.

Content decay is what happens when a post that once brought steady traffic slowly loses it. Competitors publish newer pages, facts age, the search results change. The traffic does not vanish in a day, which is why it goes unnoticed until the monthly numbers look thin.

Step 1: find the posts that are slipping

You need clicks over time, which means Search Console. Compare the last 28 days with the 28 before for each page and look for the ones that fell. In OnlyAI SEO the Insights page has a Content decay tab that does this, and the Refresher agent turns the biggest drops into cards in your Inbox with the evidence (for example "clicks fell 38%").

Step 2: ask the question most tools skip

Is this post evergreen or dated? "Best processors to buy in 2018" is out of date and worth refreshing. "2018 FIFA World Cup" is history, and its traffic fell for a good reason. Refreshing a result page makes it worse, not better.

  • Evergreen: guides, how-tos, top lists, comparisons, reviews, checklists.
  • Dated: match reports, results, awards, announcements, a person retiring or signing, a season written as a range.

OnlyAI SEO makes that call from the title and the category and tag names, with no AI, and leaves dated posts alone (why it matters). You can overrule it on any post.

Step 3: refresh in small, real steps

A refresh is not a rewrite. The edits that usually matter most:

  1. Check every fact, number, price and link. Replace what is out of date. This is the part no tool can do for you.
  2. Sharpen the opening so the answer is in the first paragraph.
  3. Add a short key-takeaways list near the top.
  4. Improve the title and description so they say what the reader gets (add the current year only if the page really is about the current year).
  5. Add internal links from newer posts to this one.

The Evergreen Renewer prepares exactly this kind of small update for you to review: a better opening, a short key-takeaways list, a sharper title and description, at most about 100 words changed, with the previous version kept. See the step-by-step guide.

Step 4: tell search engines, then wait

Update the post. If the permalink has no date, a new published date is fine; the address never changes. Then give it a few weeks before judging. Check Search Console again for the same queries.

What not to do

  • Do not change only the date to look fresh. Readers and search engines notice when nothing else changed.
  • Do not refresh everything at once. Start with the posts that used to earn the most and have slipped.
  • Do not delete an old post that still has links pointing to it. Redirect it to the best replacement instead (redirects guide).
